Do You Know if Your Parking Lot is ADA Compliant?
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was established in 1990. It was created to ensure those with disabilities have access to all places that are open to the general public. This covers both the inside and outside of businesses. Accessibility starts in the parking lot so in 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design (2010 Standards) was created to govern parking lot design. When a business restripes their parking it must provide the accessible parking as outlined by these 2010 Standards.
Below you will find a chart that includes how many accessible spaces are needed as well as the minimum number of van-accessible spaces required. These numbers are based upon the total number of parking spaces available in the parking lot. Please note that even if you only have one parking space, it is required to be an accessible space.
Location
Accessible parking spaces, as well as the accessible path, should be located on a stable, slip-resistant and level surface. The slope along
the accessible route should not be greater than 1:12 in any direction of travel. These spaces should be located closest to the accessible entrance to the building. If the building has multiple accessible entrances the accessible parking should be dispersed so that accessible spaces are located at each entrance. The accessible path should be at least 3 feet wide and should be free and clear of any obstacles.
Accessible Parking Spaces for Cars
Accessible parking space should be at least 96-inches wide. Each space must have an access aisle at least 60 inches wide. Two accessible spots may share this access aisle. Each accessible spot should be marked with a sign with the international symbol of accessibility posted at least 60 inches above the ground.
Van Accessible Parking Spaces
One of eight parking spaces, but always at least one, should be van accessible. These spaces should be at least 96-inches wide and must also have an access aisle that is also at least 96-inches wide. The path to, the access aisle and the van accessible space should have a minimum height clearance of 98 inches. These spaces should be marked with both the international symbol of accessibility as well as a van accessible sign at least 60 inches from the ground.
